Data & Methodology
The data feeds behind Athena's signals, how signals are validated before they ship, and how to read them responsibly.
Where the data comes from
Athena’s signals are built on professional-grade market data, combined with a large amount of first-party collection and computation. The main feeds:
| Source | What it powers |
|---|---|
| Coinglass (Pro) | Derivatives microstructure: cohort long/short ratios, funding rates, taker flow, spot flow, and liquidation heatmaps — the backbone of the Smart Money grid, Athena’s Wisdom, and Liquidation Gravity. |
| Hyperliquid public API | Wallet-level fills, live positions, and builder-dex (HIP-3) markets — the raw material for the Elite wallet ranking and portfolios and the real-time position alerts. |
| Lighter public API | Athena’s second smart-money venue — the zk-rollup perps exchange behind Robinhood Chain, with 200+ markets including a deep tokenized-equity/commodity/FX (RWA) universe that feeds the Elite RWA Traders product. |
| Deribit + Binance | Options open interest for Options Max Pain (Deribit) and perp reference prices / order-book context (Binance). |
| Professional US options feed | Full listed-options chains for the Volatility Screener. Implied volatility is computed in-house from option prices (Black-76 on the at-the-money pair), so the IV history is methodologically consistent across the whole universe. |
All collection runs on Athena’s own infrastructure on fixed schedules — from every 2 minutes for elite position polling up to nightly for the options board — and every signal snapshot is archived the moment it is produced.
The feeds themselves are the raw material — Athena’s real edge is the data she has been carefully curating, organizing, backtesting, and forward-testing for a long time: cleaned universes, a first-party wallet catalog scored over months of live history, and an ever-growing archive of every signal she has ever published. That accumulated, battle-tested history is something no amount of raw API access can reproduce — you cannot rewind time and start collecting.
How signals are validated
Athena maintains a strict separation between the research lab and production. Nothing ships because a backtest looked good:
- Economic rationale first. A candidate signal needs a reason to exist (who is on the other side, and why they’re wrong) before any code is written.
- A hostile validation gauntlet. Candidates face out-of-sample and cross-validated testing, multiple-testing discipline (a signal must beat the bar after accounting for how many ideas were tried), execution-grade cost assumptions, and an adversarial red-team review whose job is to kill the idea.
- Forward-testing is the verdict. Every live signal’s outputs are captured to an immutable archive from day one and re-scored continuously against what the market actually did next. A backtest is a hypothesis; the forward test decides what stays, what gets reframed, and what gets retired.
This is also why some Athena surfaces are explicitly labelled descriptive rather than directional: liquidation structure, for example, is published as market context because that is what the evidence supports — not dressed up as a trade signal.
Refresh cadences
| Signal | Cadence |
|---|---|
| Elite wallet positions & alerts | ~2 minutes |
| Smart Money grid | 15 minutes |
| Liquidation Gravity | 15–30 minutes |
| Athena’s Wisdom | Hourly |
| Options Max Pain | 4 hours |
| Volatility Screener | Nightly full rebuild + intraday re-quotes on market days |
| Elite ranking (the list itself) | Continuous scanning; list re-finalized several times daily |
What we don’t publish
These docs describe what every signal measures and how to read it. The exact recipes — ensemble weights, ranking-composite constants, gate thresholds, universe-selection rules, and alert triggers — are Athena’s edge and stay private. If a number isn’t in these docs or in a live payload, treat any third-party claim about it as speculation.
Positioning data describes the state of the market, not the future. Crowded shorts can get more crowded; elite wallets can be wrong; liquidation fuel can sit untouched for weeks. Use Athena’s surfaces as context and confluence — never as a substitute for your own risk management.
